C-V2X Technology
At the core of 5GAA work lies Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X).
C-V2X is a connected mobility platform that enables vehicles to interact with their surroundings, including other vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, road infrastructure, and mobile networks. To enable connectivity within the broader transport ecosystem, C-V2X uses two complementary transmission modes.
Direct Communications (PC5)
First, direct communications (PC5) work independently of cellular networks and allow vehicles to communicate with other road users (cyclists, pedestrians or other vehicles).
Network Communications (Uu)
Second, network communications (Uu) leverages conventional mobile networks to enable vehicles to receive real-time information about road conditions and local traffic.
Technology
How C-V2X Works
C-V2X provides one unified solution that enables vehicles to communicate directly with other vehicles (V2V), infrastructure (V2I), pedestrians (V2P), as well as with mobile networks and cloud services (V2N), by leveraging existing cellular network infrastructure.
Non-Terrestrial Networks can complement terrestrial mobile networks by extending connectivity to areas where ground coverage is limited or unavailable.
C-V2X supports two complementary communication modes:
Direct Communications between devices, enabling vehicles, infrastructure, and road users. This communication allows for the exchange of information directly without necessarily relying on network involvement. It can operate without a SIM or network assistance. It uses GNSS as its primary time synchronisation source.
Mobile Network Communications to enable communication with cloud services and traffic management systems, supporting applications such as real-time traffic information, over-the-air updates, remote diagnostics, and advanced mobility services.
By integrating NTN into the C-V2X ecosystem, vehicles can benefit from more ubiquitous and resilient connectivity, ensuring continuity of safety and information services even in remote or disrupted environments.
Together, these capabilities form a complete and scalable connected mobility ecosystem.
